Some of the best handguns are old

I recently met up with Weerd Beard at Cabelas in Scarborough to peruse the gun library and got to see some really cool handguns and rifles. The Cabelas Gun Library houses some very unique, uncommon and old firearms.

Yes, the latest-and-greatest thing is cool to see, but it’s important to also know where you’ve been and how you got there. Seeing some of these old handguns is really like stepping back in time. You can see the difference in manufacturing techniques, technologies and how the mass-production line really influenced the firearms industry (as it did many others as well).

Weerd and I got to handle a very uncommon Merwin & Hulbert revolver, a gun that uses a unique method of unloading only the spent cases, as well as a Colt New Service in .38-40.

The Colt New Service was one of the early double-action revolvers, and was used by many people in the early 1900s. The .38-40 is an interesting cartridge. It was very popular among gun owners during the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. Check out the podcast episode and hear about some more awesome old firearms we got to see!
